The trip

A day on the sand. Nobody hunts for parking.

Spring break fills Panama City Beach. By the city's own account, the crowds arrive in early March and stay into early April. The sand is a little under two hours down the road from Tallahassee, close enough for a day there and back.

It is also a day when parking is the hard part. The visitor bureau warns that cars parked illegally or blocking traffic get ticketed or towed. So we drive it. The van drops you at the beach in the morning and picks you up in the evening, and the only thing you carry is your towel.

Before you go

Buy the ride here. The beach is free.

Panama City Beach is a public beach. There is no ticket and nothing to buy to walk onto the sand. What we sell is the ride: from Tallahassee to the beach, and home the same day.

March has its own rules. Alcohol is not allowed on the sandy beach for the whole month, at any time of day. In the peak spring break weeks the city adds more, including a curfew for unaccompanied minors in some areas. The visitor bureau keeps the full list in one place. Read it before you pack.

Watch the flags. Two red flags mean the water is closed to the public, and ignoring an order to come out can mean a fine. The visitor bureau sends flag changes by text if you sign up on its safety page.

How it goes

Getting on. Be at your pickup a few minutes early. The van leaves on time and does not come back for a second run.

At the beach. You are dropped at Panama City Beach, and the day is yours. Bring water, sunscreen and something for shade, and check the flag before you go in.

Coming home. The van is at the same spot at the time on your booking. Put that time in your phone when you get off.
