The trip

Savannah turns green. You skip the drive.

Savannah's Irish Catholic community has marked the Feast of Saint Patrick since 1824. Today the parade is around 280 units long: bands, families, societies, soldiers, public servants and floats, winding through the streets and squares of historic downtown. It steps off after Mass at the Cathedral Basilica of St. John the Baptist, and it is held on St. Patrick's Day itself, even on a weekday.

It is also four hours from Tallahassee, on a morning when the streets near the route close and parked cars get towed. So we drive it. The van gets you to Savannah for the parade, you spend the day and the night in the city, and the van brings you home the next day. Nine seats, one driver, and no ticket to buy.

No ticket needed

Buy the ride here. The parade is free.

Nobody sells tickets to watch the parade. You find a spot along the route, on a sidewalk or in one of the squares, and the city opens the squares to parade-goers on the morning itself. What we sell is the ride: from Tallahassee to Savannah, and home again the next day. Your bed for the night is yours to book.

If you would rather sit, the committee's site lists bleacher seats along the route, sold by Kelly Tours. They are optional. Down on the river, Plant Riverside District runs its own St. Patrick's celebration with live music. That one is the district's, not the parade committee's.

The city sets rules for its St. Patrick's zone downtown: no coolers, no fireworks, no bikes or skates, and more besides. Read them before you pack.

How it goes

Getting on. This one starts early. Be at your pickup a few minutes before the time on your booking. It is a long drive, the van leaves on time, and it does not come back for a second run.

In Savannah. You are dropped as close to the Historic District as the road closures allow, and the route runs through its squares. Wear shoes you can stand in all morning. The parade committee asks for a festive and responsible celebration, and the city's rules for the day apply to everyone on the street.

The night. Where you stay is yours to book, so book it before you book your seat. We do not arrange rooms.

Coming home. The next day the van comes back for you at the time on your booking. Put that time in your phone before the parade starts.
