The trip

The beach's biggest parade. No parking lot to fight for.

The Krewe of Wrecks is Pensacola Beach's original Mardi Gras krewe, and its parade is the biggest on the beach: marching units, oversized floats with generous riders, dignitaries and krewe royalty, rolling rain or shine down Via de Luna to the Gulfside Pavilion at Casino Beach. When the last float is in, the pavilion turns into a free party with music and performances, the top krewes win awards for their floats and costumes, and the Grand Marshal's Award is announced.

Pensacola Beach is three hours from Tallahassee, and the organisers warn that parking fills up fast on parade day. So we drive it. The van leaves Tallahassee in the morning, drops you at the beach, and brings you home the same day. Nine seats, one driver, and nobody circling the island looking for a space.

There is no charge to watch the Krewe of Wrecks parade, and the party at the Gulfside Pavilion afterwards is open to the public at no charge too. What we sell is the ride: from Tallahassee to Pensacola Beach, and home again the same day.

How it goes

Getting on. Be at your pickup a few minutes early. The van leaves on time and does not come back for a second run.

At the beach. The floats line up along Via de Luna before the parade, and you can walk the sidewalk for a look at them and their riders. To catch beads, find a spot behind the barricades, which line the whole route to the Casino Beach parking lot. Via de Luna closes to cars shortly before the parade. There are public restrooms at Casino Beach and the Pensacola Beach Boardwalk, and portable toilets along the route.

Coming home. The van is back where it dropped you at the time on your booking. Pensacola Beach is on Central time, an hour behind Tallahassee, so check the time on your booking against the clock on your phone, and put it in your phone before the parade rolls.
