The trip

Weekend one at the Fair Grounds

Jazz Fest takes over the Fair Grounds Race Course for two weekends, and this trip is the first of them. The music is the music of Louisiana in every form it takes: gospel, blues, R&B, Cajun, zydeco, brass, and jazz both old and new. Most of the bands on the bill are part of the Louisiana music community, and the food is Louisiana food.

New Orleans is about six hours from Tallahassee, and there is next to no parking at the Fair Grounds: the few spaces on site go to VIP package holders and people with disabilities, and the streets around it are for residents. So we drive it. The van gets you to the festival, you spend the night wherever you have booked, and it brings you home the next day.

Beyond the stages

More than music

Between the stages are the craft markets, among them the Congo Square African Marketplace and the Louisiana Marketplace, and the culture areas: the Louisiana Folklife Village, the Native American Village and a Cultural Exchange Pavilion. The Grandstand holds exhibits, and it has shade and air conditioning when the infield gets hot.

The festival announces its lineup and opens ticket sales at the same time. The full day-by-day schedule, which it calls the cubes, usually follows about a month before the gates open. Check it for the day this van runs.

A seat on the van is not a festival ticket. What we sell is the ride: we pick you up in Tallahassee, take you to the Fair Grounds, and bring you home the next day. Getting through the gate is between you and the festival.

The festival sells its own tickets, and its VIP packages (Big Chief, Grand Marshal and Krewe of Jazz Fest) as well. Before you book a seat, check that your ticket is for the day this van runs, and that you have somewhere to sleep.

How it goes

Getting on. Be at your pickup a few minutes before the time on your booking. It is a long way to New Orleans, the van leaves on time, and it does not come back for a second run.

At the Fair Grounds. You walk in through one of the public gates, on Gentilly Boulevard, Trafalgar Street or Sauvage Street. The festival is cashless, so bring a card. Your ticket is your own to buy; we only drive.

The night. Where you stay is yours to book, and the festival itself says to book early, because rooms are in high demand on festival weekends. We do not arrange rooms.

Coming home. The next day the van comes back for you at the time on your booking. Put that time in your phone before the music starts.
